Between July 1870 and May 1871 the General Council of the International Working-Men’s Association issued three Addresses to the members of the Association in Europe and the United States. They were written by Marx on the heroic struggle of the workers in Paris who, after the defeat of the French army by the Prussians, had established the Commune. The Commune was soon crushed by the French bourgeoisie which had promptly allied with their Prussian enemy against the Parisian workers whom they themselves had armed. When Marx read his Third Address – which would then become an essay entitled The Civil War in France – before the General Council, the guns of the firing squads were still in action. However, the basic achievement of the Commune would remain forever – the discovery of a political form in which the working class could begin to emancipate all of mankind along with itself. As Arrigo Cervetto commented, it was “discovered by means of the mind from material facts… and not invented by the mind”. Marx could therefore underline the legacy of the Commune which is still valid today: “Through the fight in Paris, the struggle of the working class against the capitalist class... has entered upon a new phase... a fresh starting-point of worldwide historical importance has been won.” |
